Hoodia Gordonii is a very potent herbal appetite suppressant. The appetite suppressant effects of Hoodia were first observed in mid 1960's. It was noticed that the tribal San Bushmen ate the stem of the Hoodia plant to stave off hunger during long hunting trips in the Kalahari Desert. So how does Hoodia Gordnii work?
The steroid glycoside P57, a protein, which is the active chemical component in Hoodia Gordonii, acts on the brain in a manner similar to glucose. P57 sends signals to a portion in the brain called the hypothalamus and makes you think that you are full even when you have not eaten. P57 also reduces interest in food and extend the time delay between meals.
When you eat, blood sugar levels increase and the cells in the hypothalamus begin firing which is what tells the body that you are full. Once the P57 is in the blood stream, it is believed to be about 10,000 times as effective as glucose in making those cells in the hypothalamus fire. As a result you get all the effects of having eaten a full meal without having consumed anything except the Hoodia Gordonii.
